Purchase it here.<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u266b\u266a\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u266b\u266a \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u266b\u266a<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>EXCERPTS from <em>S<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>cores to<\/em><em> Settle<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><strong>&#8220;But We Shall Have Tonight!&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Puccini\u2019s opera <i>Tosca <\/i>tells of revenge and murder\u2014both of which were also in the air backstage after a notorious Saturday night performance at the Metropolitan Opera.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">One the evening of the performance Met General Manager Schuyler Chapin went to see Franco Corelli, who was singing the part of Cavaradossi, and found him at his dressing table, staring into the mirror, brooding over his enmity for conductor Carlo Cillario.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Chapin pointed out that the conductor would not be returning for the next season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Corelli remained uneasy. \u201cBut we still have tonight,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">After more reassuring words, Chapin went off to his box to enjoy the opera with friends.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The pleasure was short-lived.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">At the end of two key arias, Cillario tried to rush the orchestra over the applause When Corelli slowed him down in one aria by hanging onto two long notes, the conductor retaliated by quickening the tempo, forcing the tenor to keep up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In Act III the disgusted tenor flipped his thumb between his teeth in a gesture of defiance and left the stage, forcing Dorothy Kirsten, as Tosca, to sing to the empty space where he was supposed to be.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">When he returned in time to ascend the steps for Cavaradossi\u2019s execution, one property man expressed regret at not putting real bullets in the rifles. As the shots rang out, several people backstage applauded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">As soon as the curtain came down, Corelli ran toward the orchestra pit, yelling insults. When Cillario emerged, Corelli pounced and did his best to strangle him. It took Chapin, the artistic administrator, and three big stagehands to pry the two apart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Shouting over the mixture of applause and boos from the audience, Chapin commanded Corelli to go out and take a curtain call, which he did.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Chapin suggested to Cillario that it would <i>not<\/i> be a good time to take a solo conductor bow.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Scores to Settle: Stories of the Struggle to Create Great Music Scores to Settle brings classical music to life through stories about the struggle to create and perform it.
